Box 20708, Houston, Texas 77225 Abstract.-Male weakfish, Cynoscion regalis, were collected from the southwest portion ofDelaware Bay from April through September in 1990 and 1991. Morphometric measurements ofthe sonic muscles, testis size (gonadosomatic index, or GSIl, and plasma androgen concentrations were recorded to obtain data on the seasonality of sonic muscle condition and its relationship with the timing of reproduction in this population. The sonic muscles were bilaterally symmetrical and showed no significant seasonal differences in length or width across both collecting periods. Sonic muscle thickness did change significantly across both collecting periods and there was a threefold increase in sonic muscle mass during the course of each collecting period. GSI and levels of both plasma testosterone and 11ketotestosterone also varied significantly across both collecting seasons. Changes in sonic muscle mass followed but lagged one to three weeks behind the rise and fall in plasma androgen levels. Pertinent models of skeletal muscle hypertrophy and atrophy are discussed as is the possibility that increased sonic muscle mass during the spawning season may increase the reproductive fitness of male weakfish.

Patterns of intra-estuarine movement of adult weakfish (Cynoscion regalis): evidence of site affinity at seasonal and diel scales

The views and opinions expressed or implied in this article are those of the author (or authors) and do not necessarily reflect the position of the National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA. Abstract—Fine-scale movements of and use of habitat space by individual marine fishes can structure broader population dynamics, yet little is known about these traits. This lack of key information applies to...

Effects of fish size and temperature on weakfish disturbance calls: implications for the mechanism of sound generation.

To categorize variation in disturbance calls of the weakfish Cynoscion regalis and to understand their generation, we recorded sounds produced by different-sized fish, and by similar-sized fish at different temperatures, as well as muscle electromyograms. Single, simultaneous twitches of the bilateral sonic muscles produce a single sound pulse consisting of a two- to three-cycle acoustic wavefo...

Audition in sciaenid fishes with different swim bladder-inner ear configurations.

We investigated how morphological differences in the auditory periphery of teleost fishes may relate to hearing capabilities. Two species of western Atlantic sciaenids were examined: weakfish (Cynoscion regalis, Block and Schneider) and spot (Leiostomus xanthurus, Lacepede). These species differ in the anatomical relationship between the swim bladder and the inner ear. In weakfish, the swim bla...

Is global climate change influencing the overwintering distribution of weakfish Cynoscion regalis?

The pattern of stable isotope signatures in a sub-sample of 67 juvenile weakfish Cynoscion regalis, captured at the mouth of the Christina River, 113 km upstream of the mouth of Delaware Bay (U.S.A) in the autumn of 2000, suggested that they resided at the location since recruitment. The possibility that young C. regalis departed from the generally characteristic life-history pattern of marine ...

Relative yield-per-recruit and management strategies for Cynoscion acoupa (Perciformes: Sciaenidae) in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela.

Acoupa weakfish, Cynoscion acoupa, in Lake Maracaibo is subject to intense commercial fishing by an artisanal fleet, and a recent decrease in fish size observed from landings is of concern. This fishery has not yet been modeled, and its assessment and the establishment of management practices to overcome the current overfished condition are urgently needed. To address this, we used recent and p...
